Why Choose OTAs to Grow Your Outdoor and Leisure Business?

As an outdoor or leisure professional, your true expertise lies out in the field: on the slopes, in the water, or in the great outdoors. Yet, to make a living from your passion, you need to attract customers. And that's often where things get tricky: digital marketing takes time, requires specific skills, and costs money.

It's 8 p.m. A family on holiday is looking for a rafting trip for tomorrow. They don't know you. They'll never type the name of your base into Google. So they book… somewhere else. You've just lost that customer. Not because your activity isn't good enough, but because you weren't visible at the exact moment they reached for their card. That's precisely where OTAs come in. Many professionals see them as a necessary evil, even an enemy eating into their margins. Let us explain why that's a flawed way of thinking — and how to turn these platforms into a genuine ally.

What exactly is an OTA?

OTA stands for Online Travel Agency. These are the vast storefronts where millions of travellers search, compare and book activities in just a few clicks. In the outdoor and leisure world, you probably know them: Manawa, GetYourGuide, CheckYeti, SkiBro or Ubiliz. In exchange for a commission on each booking, they give you visibility you could never afford on your own. Think of them as a shelf in a global supermarket: you don't have to be there, but that's where the customers are.

The anti-commission reflex: a classic trap

"I'm not going to hand 20% to a middleman." That reflex is understandable. But it confuses two very different things: a cost and an investment.A booking that comes through an OTA is very often a customer you would never have reached directly. So it's not a lost commission: it's revenue that didn't exist yesterday. The real question isn't "how much does this cost me?" but "does this platform bring me customers I wouldn't have had otherwise?" If the answer is yes, the commission becomes the price of a conquest.

4 good reasons to integrate OTAs

01
A global storefront, with no advertising budget.
OTAs invest millions in SEO and advertising to attract travellers. By listing your activities, you tap into that firepower — in several languages, across every continent — without spending a cent on ads.
02
Capture last-minute customers.
A large share of activity bookings are decided the day before, or even the same morning, often from a smartphone. OTAs are built for this impulse purchase, 24/7. While you're on the water or on the slopes, they sell for you.
03
Fill your empty slots.
A rainy Tuesday, a half-empty session: these gaps in the schedule are what drag a season down. OTAs help you sell off places that would otherwise go to waste, and smooth out your activity across the week.
04
Reassure new customers.
A traveller who doesn't know you hesitates to pay on an unknown website. The platform's reputation, its verified reviews and its secure payment remove that barrier. The OTA lends you its credibility for a first booking.

The real danger isn't commission: it's overbooking

Here's the real trap of going multi-channel. The phone rings and you jot down a booking. At the same moment, an OTA sells the same slot. And your website sells a third. The result: three customers for two spots, and a morning spent handling complaints instead of doing your job.The solution has a name: the channel manager. Picture a conductor who synchronises your availability in real time across all your channels. A spot sold somewhere instantly disappears everywhere else. Overbooking simply becomes impossible.
Visibility & Margin

The winning strategy : hybrid

The good news is you don't have to choose between OTAs and your direct sales. The two complement each other perfectly: OTAs for acquisition (they get you known and bring in fresh customers), and your own website for loyalty (once the customer is won, you bring them back to your direct channels, commission-free, for every time after that). That's the hybrid strategy: use the power of the platforms to fill the top of the funnel, then capitalise on every customer with your own tools. You keep the best of both worlds — visibility and margin.
